Welcome to Peavy Primary's School Counseling Page
Our mission and philosophy at Peavy Primary is to ensure all students are successful in all aspects of their lives. Students will be given opportunities to learn and grow while receiving interventions to foster their personal, academic, and social needs. The counselor is available to provide personal support for academics, social and emotional needs, and careers. The counselor’s goal is for all students to not only be successful at school, but beyond graduation as responsible members of society.
What is the school counselor's role?
Professional school counselors provide schools with a leader and advocate for all children. They are present to ensure equity for all students as well as a support system for teachers and administrators. Counselors are responsible for implementing policies and practices that promote student success. The role of the professional school counselor has evolved greatly in the past several years. Though counselors are not responsible for teaching students the academics they are being tested over, they play a key role in maximizing student achievement. Counselors must help teachers and parents identify barriers that are preventing student achievement. They are then expected to implement interventions to make sure all students succeed. “School counseling is one component of a complex system that is being held accountable for educating today’s students to a higher level of academic proficiency than ever before” (Martin & Robinson, 2011, p.1).
